Did you know that micronutrient levels can affect your DNA and can consequently lead to various forms of cancer? We spoke with Lauri Armstrong, a Genetic Direction telehealth professional, to learn what you can do to avoid this issue in your own body.
The quantity of specific vitamins and minerals available in your bloodstream right now from the whole, good foods you eat (or don’t eat) can affect your DNA and possibly lead to forms of cancer. That’s why we want to educate you and make sure that you know how to get the right vitamins and minerals into your system!
One study that Lauri pointed out showed that low blood levels of B12, B6, B9, B3, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, iron and zinc can act like radiation in damaging your DNA strands. Low levels of these vitamins, just like radiation, can cause the DNA strands to break, oxidize or both. Read the study here: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10668486
Another study showed showed that blood levels of B9 (folate) and B12 that are a bit higher than current recommendations minimize genomic instability and DNA breakage. And get this – the quarter of the population that eats the fewest fruits and veggies has almost double the rate of colon cancer than the quarter of the population that eats the most fruits and veggies! About 80% of American kids and teens and 68% of adults do not currently eat the recommended 5 servings of fruits and veggies a day. Make sure that you’re not one of them!
But don’t worry! We’re not going to leave you high and dry with that scary statistic! Here at Genetic Direction, we want to make sure that you have the tools necessary to live a healthy life and ensure that your body is functioning at its peak.
First of all, it’s easy to find information online about which fruits and vegetables contain the vitamins we all need. Make sure that you are eating enough of them! But some of you might read that and think that you just can’t add another thing to worry about to your plate right now. We get it!
That’s why we’ve created GxSlim, the all-around package that starts with a simple DNA test. With a basic cheek swab, we can find out if you are more likely to be deficient in certain vitamins and minerals (like B9)! Once we know what you need more of based on your DNA, we’re able to create customized fitness and diet plans that are tailored to your needs. You’ll never have to worry about researching this by yourself, or trying to find or eat enough of the right fruits and veggies. We’ll do all the work for you. All you have to do is stick to the plan!
