Google the word superfood and you’ll come up with hundreds of thousands of blogs about what superfoods to be eating. The fact is that so long as you’re eating a healthy balance diet, superfoods can only help. There’s no exact definition to define what a superfood is. Most of them are high in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. And while superfoods aren’t aren’t a magic cure all, they have been proven to have anti-aging properties, increase immune system function, help prevent cancer/chronic disease, and improve energy levels and overall health. So here’s a list of our favorite superfoods to be consuming!
Cinnamon
Sprinkle this spice on everything you can! Cinnamon is known to be extremely high in antioxidants and has been shown to stabilize blood sugar levels as well as aid in minimizing PMS symptoms and even decrease inflammation in the body.
Wild Blueberries
These little berries are extremely high in antioxidants, vitamin C, vitamin K and manganese. Pop them in smoothies, yogurt or even just eat them as a snack on their own. It never hurts to up your berry intake.
Avocados
This beautiful bad boys are extremely popular for a reason. They’re praised for their amazing amounts of health fats and are a key food for anyone eating a vegetarian or vegan diet. They’re also rich in folate and vitamin C, so there’s really no reason not to pile on that guacamole, so long as you limit the number of chips.
Spirulina
You may or may not have heard of spirulina. It’s a blue-green algae that can definitely smell like the sea, but it does wonders for the body. It’s known to bind with heavy metals and help remove them from the body as well as potentially help lower blood pressure. Plus, it’s higher in protein than red meat. Toss a spoonful in a smoothie to mask the flavor and you’re good to go!
Flaxseeds
Another great superfood packed with omega-3s and heart healthy fats. Plus, their high in protein and fiber and when ground up can even be used as an egg substitute.
Maca
This is one you might not have heard of. Mac powder is made from a root vegetable grown in the Andes. It’s known as an adaptogen which means that when taken in small doses consistently over a long period of time, it can improve health and in this case boost overall energy. It’s a great replacement for caffeine.
Ashwagandha
Another adaptogen that is key if you feel like you’re never energize, no matter how much coffee you drink or how many hours of sleep you get. This herb is the key to helping heal adrenal fatigue, something that so many of us suffer from without even really realizing. Mix it into matcha, tea or hot chocolate daily and see how much more energy you have just a few months later.
Hemp Seeds
Despite their association with marijuana, hemp seeds have none of the psychoactive properties that make weed so intriguing. They do, however, have the perfect ration of omega 3s and omega 6s and are an incredible source of protein, amino acids, magnesium and potassium. Plus, they taste wonderfully nutty and can be ground into a delicious butter.
